So, you’ve decided to start dancing — maybe ballet, jazz, contemporary, or hip hop — as an adult.

First of all: YAY YOU! 🎉

But let’s be real: adult beginner dancers face a different set of challenges than the kids and teens you see on Instagram or TikTok. And no one really talks about them.

Here's a little insider wisdom to help you skip the overwhelm and fall in love with dancing your way.

1️⃣ You Don’t Need to Be “Good” to Start

Forget the idea that you have to be flexible, coordinated, or “naturally talented” to dance. Despite what it may feel like sometimes, dance is for everyone — seriously.

2️⃣ It’s Normal to Feel Out of Place at First

Walking into your first adult dance class can feel intimidating. But remember: everyone was new once. Give it time. I'm talking give it MINIMUM 3 weeks, or even better, 3 months, before you decide if it's for you.

3️⃣ Progress Looks Different for Adults

Kids’ bodies adapt fast. Adults? We’re balancing jobs, families, and old injuries. Go at your own pace — and celebrate the small wins.

4️⃣ Consistency Beats Intensity

It’s better to dance 2x/week consistently than to burn yourself out with a 6-day sprint. Slow and steady builds real strength. (trust me on this, I've started and stopped enough to realize steady wins)

5️⃣ You’ll Need to Relearn How to Learn

Adult brains love overthinking. Try to stay playful and curious — not perfectionistic.

6️⃣ Flexibility Comes From Strength + Consistency

Spoiler: stretching alone won’t make you flexible. You need strength, control, and consistent practice.

7️⃣ Finding the Right Teacher Is Key

Look for instructors who respect adult learners, understand adult bodies, and create a supportive atmosphere. If you can't find the right thing near you (a common struggle), look at online options like STEEZY studio, CLI studios, or The Space TV which all have great options for various levels and styles (STEEZY and CLI i've found to be more beginner friendly).

8️⃣ Injury Prevention Is a Priority

Warm up. Cross-train. Listen to your body. Adult dancers can thrive — but only if we dance smart.

9️⃣ Your Goals Matter

Whether you want to master a pirouette or just dance for joy, clear goals keep you motivated. (I use the Dance Goal Setting Guide — you can check it out here!)

🔟 You Are NOT Too Old

Let me say it louder: You are not too old. Dance is timeless.
